Classic Route 66 Motels

Albuquerque, New Mexico: Zia Motor Lodge sign along Central Avenue. Originally built in 1938 and closed in 2002, the motel was demolished by the city in 2003 after a squatter’s fire. The existing Zia Motor Lodge sign, which dates from 1961, was used as a location in the television show “Breaking Bad”. The city of Albuquerque’s planning department supports the preservation of the neon signs along historic Route 66, many of which are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
